Tri-ang Train Set Repair, Serviced, Refurbish & Fully Restored

We were sent a Tri-ang 1960’s train set from a customer the for a repair and refurbishment. The customer wants to do a wonderful thing, and pass the train set down to his Grandson.

The set consisted of the following:

  • Tri-ang R59 Class 3MT Tank 2-6-2 BR 82004 – Black.
  • Tri-ang R15 United Dairies Milk Tanker.
  • Tri-ang R110 Bogie Bolster Wagon.
  • Tri-ang R118 Bogie Wagon.

So on first inspection, there are many things missing and broken from the loco and wagons.

Well where do you start with the 2-6-2 tank loco, loads of parts missing, including structure parts inside, con rods, buffers etc etc. The motor was a none runner, and the overall loco was a bit of a mess. However, the good news was the shell was OK and not broken. So after buying 2 donor locomotives, we got all the parts and a working original motor which needed a service and re-magnetising. Once we had all the parts, everything was put together and new BR logo transfers on the side, and it now runs lovely and looks great.

Tri-ang R15 United Dairies Milk Tanker
There was not much of the UD wagon that was not broken or missing, so we found a donor wagon to borrow parts from to replace the missing items, then a bit of a clean up and TLC and it was good to go and deliver the milk to the next town.

Tri-ang R110 Bogie Bolster Wagon
We were told the wagon had wood/logs has its cargo and looking online we can see there were support spikes for this purpose. So we purchased a donor wagon and used the spikes from it and then cut some wood and then a bit of a clean up and TLC and it was good to go.

Tri-ang R118 Bogie Wagon
This R118 wagon as far as we can find online, never had a cargo, it came in a flat box, so a bit of a clean up and TLC and it was good to go. I am thinking you can add what ever you like? Banana anyone? ha ha

Extras & Final thoughts
We really enjoyed working on this project and finding parts and hope this will bring back some great memories for the customer and new memories for his family.

Just for good will, we also found a Tri-ang B5097 Black Shell BP Tanker Wagon that had been lost from the original set.
